Jean Leibowitz Wiecha

Jean Leibowitz Wiecha is an artist and writer in Portland. Her book with co-author Lisa Rogers, Discover Her Art: Women Artists and Their Masterpieces (2022, Chicago Review Press), explores the art of painting and the role of women in art history through 24 masterworks by women. Jean’s own painting practice includes portraiture, landscapes, and seascapes. In paintings of rocky shores, waterfronts, bridges, tanks, and boats, she celebrates coastal Maine’s textures, light, and rough physicality. She is represented by Elizabeth Moss Galleries of Falmouth, Maine. During her previous career in public health research, Jean collaborated with schools and community organizations on healthy eating and physical activity programs for kids. Her working principles are to be curious, ask lots of questions, and experiment.
